About

Jill Wunder, Julie Calmus, and Cheryl Laible opened the doors of their new shop in August of 2008, with intentions of serving their community with open arms. Atmosphere and fine gourmet food and coffee along with good friendly service trademark their business philosophy.

Working together created a vision born of friendship and faith in God, to give back what they could to a town where they've lived and raised their children. The girls, doing business as Uptown Girls LLC are especially proud of the christian atmosphere they offer their patrons.

Based on the togetherness they have shared so many times over a good cup of coffee, the trio decided to share the benefits. Encouragement was found in Ephesians 4:1 "Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves; a cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

Higher Grounds Coffee Co. is nestled between two existing businesses on Howard's Main Street. Centrally located, it features outdoor seating in front, inside seating for 35, and plans include more outdoor seating in the back garden area. One of the more unique aspects is the "Gathering Room" which offers seating for 10-12 people for private meetings or parties.

The miracle of this new construction endeavor includes husbands Colin, Larry, and Rich as well as the girls and their children. Many talents came together to accomplish this labor of love. Colin Wunder was chief of plumbing and heating, Larry Calmus, the "tool man" and concret pro, and the master of construction, Rich Laible. Hours of time and plenty of planning, elbow grease, and prayers were needed for completion within a four month period.

Dark Canyon Coffee out of Rapid City S.D. supplies the coffee served fresh each day at Higher Grounds. Fresh coffee beans are purchased each week and are ground by the pot to ensure brewing excellence. Natural fruit smoothies and a selection of gift items are also available.

Travelers along Highway 34 through Howard will find this coffee stop appealing to people of all ages. It truly is a place where "Coffee and friends make a perfect brew".
